There’s a way to tell if a festival in Okinawa is the genuine article, the kind actual locals plan their Saturday around, instead of something dreamed up for a tourism brochure. Skip the flyer copy and go straight to the raffle table. If the grand prize is a gift card, you’re at a mall event. If the grand prize is a vacuum cleaner and a game console — and the other prizes on a given year might include a pot of hibiscus flowers or, if you’re lucky, an actual live goat — you have found the real thing. The First Kitanakagusuku Seinenrengo Festival is handing out exactly that kind of raffle, which tells you everything you need to know before you even get to the drums.
🥁 Eight-Plus Youth Groups, One Drum-Heavy Night
This is the inaugural run of a festival built by the Kitanakagusuku Village Youth Association — the same kind of organization behind eisa culture all over Okinawa, where each village or neighborhood keeps its own drumming style, chants, and choreography alive and shows it off once a year. Here, eight-plus groups take the field back-to-back: the Yagibaru, Waniya, Adaniya, Ogido, Shimabukuro, Atada, Kishaba, and Nakajun youth associations, plus three “friendship” guest groups sitting in from outside the village. Every group brings its own costumes and drum patterns, so if you’ve only ever seen eisa as one blur of red hachimaki and taiko, watching eight different versions back-to-back is the crash course nobody sold you a ticket for.

🕓 The Actual Schedule
Gates Open at 4:00 PM
Doors — or, more accurately, an elementary school field — open at 4:00 PM, with the opening ceremony kicking off half an hour later at 4:30 PM.
The Performance Block
From 4:40 PM on, groups rotate through roughly every fifteen to twenty minutes: Yagibaru Youth Association at 4:40, Waniya Youth Association at 4:55, the first Friendship Group at 5:10, and opening remarks from the organizers at 5:30. Adaniya Youth Association performs at 5:40, Ogido Youth Association at 5:55, and the second Friendship Group at 6:10, followed by guest greetings at 6:30. Shimabukuro Youth Association takes the field at 6:45, Atada Youth Association at 7:05, and the third Friendship Group at 7:25, before Kishaba Youth Association closes out the individual performances at 7:45.
The Raffle, the Finale, and Last Call
The grand raffle drawing happens at 8:05 PM — this is where the vacuum cleaner, the game console, and whatever else made the prize table go home with somebody. Nakajun Youth Association performs at 8:25 PM, and the whole night ends the way every good Okinawan festival ends: with kachaashi at 8:45 PM, the open dance where performers, vendors, and whoever wandered in for the yakisoba all throw their hands up and join in. Closing ceremony is at 9:00 PM, and the grounds officially clear out by 10:00 PM.

🍡 Food Vendors Worth Making Room For
Nine vendors are set up for the night, running the gamut from a temple selling snacks (yes, Joutokuji Temple has a booth) to a bar, to what might be the most confidently named vendor at any festival this year: Junk Food Party. Also on the lineup are Enishi-dokoro Yoshimine, BAR SMILE, Ryukyu Rafute Manjuu Kiki (rafute-stuffed steamed buns, for anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure), Kirai Mochi, and Ryukyu Charcoal-Roasted Coffee from Ryukyu World, alongside booths run by the Youth Federation itself and the Chamber of Commerce’s youth division. Bring cash and low expectations for your diet.
🚗 Parking Is Genuinely Limited, So Plan Ahead
Parking is available at the mini-ground, the village office, the central community center, and Kitanakagusuku Junior High School, with a free shuttle microbus running between the community center and junior high lots and the venue from 4:00–6:30 PM and again from 8:45–9:30 PM. Street parking around the venue is banned outright, and anyone who does park nearby is expected to move their car the same day. Given the limited spots, walking or public transit is the better call if you’re coming from anywhere in the village.
