The internet keeps telling people in their twenties to “touch grass,” like grass is a rare mineral and not the stuff growing outside your hotel or your barracks. Fine. Urasoe City is about to hand you an entire festival’s worth of it. 🌱 The 49th Urasoe Tedako Festival, nicknamed “Pokefes” because every booth is supposed to be a pocket that fun pops out of, is free, loud, and ends with fireworks. It is the kind of night people file under “core memory” while everyone else files it under “finally left the house.” No notes.

What the Name Actually Means 👑
“Tedako” is a divine title of King Eiso, who ruled back when Urasoe was the royal capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. So when you shuffle through the crowd holding a fried something on a stick, you are technically standing in a festival named after a king. Most festivals are named after a sponsor. This one has a better pedigree than your last three vacations.
The Main Stage 🎤
Eisa, music, and teenagers who tried harder than you
The main stage runs from 3 PM to 8 PM both days. Expect Eisa drum dancing, live music, and dance performances by local junior and senior high school students. Watch those kids. Somebody’s fourteen-year-old is out there hitting every step in a crowd of thousands, and you once got nervous ordering a pizza. 🥁

Detective PreCure and the Kids Village
There is a Detective PreCure show, plus a Kids Village, which is Japanese for “your children are now somebody else’s problem for an hour.” 🧒 Take the win.
The Finale 🎆
Both nights wrap with a laser show and fireworks. The source gives no exact start time, so check the official city page before you plan your dinner around it. Free fireworks are still free fireworks.

Why Bother 🌺
If you just landed for a week, or you have been stationed here for a year and your weekends have been Costco and regret, this is the real thing: a city festival run by locals for locals, with a royal name, drumming, teenagers giving it everything, and fireworks. No tour bus, no souvenir lanyard. It feels like Okinawa because nobody built it for you, and you are welcome anyway. ✨
Add October 17 and 18 to your calendar right now, before you forget and spend Saturday arguing with a streaming menu. For more local events this week, head to https://www.okisocial.com/category/events/ and pick something. 📆
