Cancelled: 17th Chatan Nirai Hari Hits the Water on June 1, 2025

  • Events

If your idea of a good time involves yelling at boats, catching fish with your bare hands, and stuffing your face with festival food—all before noon—mark your calendar for Sunday, June 1, 2025. The Chatan Nirai Hari is back for its 17th round of ocean-powered chaos at Hamagawa Fishing Port.

What’s Going On? 🛶🎤🐟

This is a traditional Hari boat race, where teams paddle long wooden fishing boats called sabani like their pride depends on it—because it kind of does. With every synchronized stroke, they fight for speed and bragging rights.

But don’t worry if you’re not into paddling. There’s way more going on than just boat races.

Why It’s Worth Your Sunday ⛱️

🎶 Live Music — Performances that may or may not drown out the sound of your cheering.
🐟 Fish Grabbing — A chaotic splash zone where kids try to catch slippery fish with their hands.
🍔 Food Trucks — Okinawa’s tastiest kitchen cars will be parked and ready to serve up all the festival eats.

From toddlers to grandparents, everyone’s welcome. It’s a local tradition that’s part cultural pride, part full-body cardio, and part all-you-can-eat snack run.
