Look, everyone’s too busy arguing about whether AI wrote their coworker’s last email to notice there’s a real, human, sweat-and-saltwater festival happening right here in Chatan Town. And while your in-laws are busy debating the correct way to season champuru, you could be watching muscled-up fishermen race handcrafted wooden boats across open water with the kind of coordinated effort that your family reunion will never, ever achieve. The 18th Chatan Nirai Haarii is going down on June 21st at Hamakawa Fishing Port, and it’s the full package — racing, live music, Eisa, fish grabbing with your bare hands, and a lineup of food trucks that will absolutely ruin your diet.

What Is Haarii? 🛶
Haarii is one of those Okinawan traditions that survived centuries because it’s genuinely compelling to watch. Teams paddle Sabani — narrow, low-slung wooden fishing boats that look like they have no business going fast — and race them in synchronized sprints across the harbor. The catch is that the whole thing depends on timing. If one person breaks rhythm, everyone suffers, which is basically a metaphor for every team you’ve ever been on, except these people have actually practiced. This year marks the 18th edition of the Chatan version, which means they’ve got the format dialed in and the crowd knows how to show up.

Everything Happening on Race Day 🎊
The opening ceremony starts at 8:00 AM, and the event runs through the day with a packed schedule. Come early if you want prime dock-side viewing. Come late if you just want the food trucks and Eisa. Both are valid strategies.
Live Music & Eisa Performances 🥁
The stage keeps things moving between race heats. You’ll get live music sets and Eisa performances — the traditional drumming and dance that’s basically the heartbeat of every major Okinawan festival. If you’ve never stood in a crowd while a proper Eisa group does their thing, you’re missing one of the better free experiences on this island. The drums get in your chest and the footwork is legitimately impressive.

Fish Catching 🐟
This is exactly what it sounds like. There’s an area where you can physically grab fish with your hands. Kids will lose it. Adults will pretend to be too cool for it and then absolutely join in anyway. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet and don’t overthink it — this is the kind of thing you’ll tell people about later.
Kitchen Cars & Festival Food 🍜
Multiple popular food trucks from around the island are setting up on site. This is Okinawa, so the range runs from comforting bowls of soki soba to grilled everything to whatever seasonal item looks irresistible in person. Budget more than you think you need. You’ll thank yourself.
