2026 Okinawa Summer Hari Events — Your Complete Dragon Boat Season Guide

You made a reservation, picked a nice spot by the water, and then Okinawa sent a typhoon. By hour three of sitting across from someone you barely know while the windows rattled and the shutters gave up, you understood something true about this island: it will always have the last word. Hari season feels like the sea gods’ apology for that evening. Okinawa has been putting dragon boats in the water and beating taiko drums until the harbor shakes since long before bad first dates existed, and it does so as a prayer for safe seas and good fishing. The 2026 Hari season runs from May through September, spans everything from a three-day festival in Naha to intimate village ceremonies on remote islands, and is one of the more genuinely impressive things this prefecture pulls off every year.

What Is Hari? 🐉

Hari — spelled H-A-R-I, though you’ll see it written ハーリー in Japanese — is Okinawa’s traditional dragon boat racing festival. The boats are called haryuusen (爬龍船), and the races are rooted in centuries of tradition: prayers for calm seas and plentiful catches, performed by fishing communities that depended on both. Most events cluster around the traditional Ryukyuan holiday known as Yucca Nu Hii (旧暦 5月4日), which in 2026 falls around June 18th — which explains why you’ll see that date pop up across a dozen different locations all at once. The season then ripples outward from there, with more events through July, August, and a final one in September.

There are two flavors of Hari. The big civic events — Naha Hari, Tomigusuku Hari, Nago Hari — draw thousands, have stages, food stalls, and a carnival atmosphere. The village Haris are something else entirely: smaller, louder in a more personal way, and deeply tied to local identity. Both are worth attending. One tells you what Okinawa shows the world. The other shows you what Okinawa actually is.

The Full 2026 Hari Lineup 🗓️

📅 June 18

June 18th is the traditional Yucca Nu Hii festival day on the Ryukyuan lunar calendar — the single biggest date of the Hari season. Fishing communities across the main island and the outer islands all hold their ceremonies on or around this day. You’ve got options.

Minatokawa Hari ⚓ (Central)

A traditional Yucca Nu Hii Hari at the fishing port of Minatomachi near Yaese Town. Small, local, and within easy reach of the central part of the island.

📍 Minatokawa Fishing Port — Mitatokawa, Yaese Town, Shimajiri District

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Itoman Hari 🎣 (South)

Itoman is Okinawa’s most storied fishing town, and its Hari reflects that — this is a community that takes the tradition seriously because the tradition is theirs.

📍 Itoman Fishing Port (Central District) — 603-1 Itoman, Itoman City

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Nashiro Hari 🏖️ (South)

Held right on the beach at Kita-Nashiro, with fishing boats in the water and the kind of atmosphere you can’t manufacture for tourists.

📍 Ya no Hama (Kita-Nashiro Beach) — 960 Nashiro, Itoman City

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Okubaru Island — Reiwa Year 8 Sea God Festival 🌊 (South)

A small, ancient ceremony tied directly to the sea and the community that lives beside it. One of the more off-the-beaten-path Hari experiences in the south.

📍 Okubaru Island Beach — Okubaru, Tamagusuku, Nanjo City

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Reiwa Year 8 Ishigaki City Dragon Boat Race 🌺 (Remote Islands)

Hari reaches all the way down to the Yaeyama Islands, where Ishigaki City holds its own dragon boat competition at the fishing port. If you’re in Ishigaki around June 18th, this is the place to be.

📍 Ishigaki Fishing Port — 83 Shin-ei Town, Ishigaki City

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Ie Island Sea God Festival 🏝️ (Remote Islands)

The small island of Ie-jima, a short ferry ride from Motobu, holds its Sea God Festival at Ie Port. A traditional ceremony in a beautiful setting — and a good excuse to finally make that day trip to Ie Island you’ve been putting off.

📍 Ie Port area — Kawahira, Ie Village, Kunigami District

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

58th Tonaki Village Sea God Festival 🌊 (Remote Islands)

Fifty-eight years at Tonaki Fishing Port, on one of Okinawa’s smallest inhabited islands. The effort required to get there is inversely proportional to how commercial this event feels, which is to say: not at all.

📍 Tonaki Fishing Port — Tonaki Village, Shimajiri District

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Torishima Hari 🐦 (Remote Islands)

Held at the small port on Torishima, an island off Kumejima. About as remote as Hari gets in 2026, and exactly the right experience if you want to see this tradition in its most unfiltered form.

📍 Torishima Fishing Port — Torishima, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri District

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

Mahaku Hari ⛵ (Remote Islands)

Also on Kumejima, the Mahaku Hari at Nakazato Fishing Port is a quiet, traditional celebration from a community that’s been doing this longer than anyone’s been writing about it.

📍 Mahaku Port (Nakazato Fishing Port, Mahaku District) — Unegusuku, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri District

📆 Thursday, June 18, 2026

📅 June 20

4th KIN Sunrise Beach Hari Tournament 🌅 (North)

Only four years old and already establishing itself, the KIN Sunrise Beach Hari has a genuinely great venue: Sunrise Beach in Kin Town, with water clear enough that you don’t need the boats to make the visit worthwhile. The boats are a bonus.

📍 KIN Sunrise Beach — 10819-4 Kin, Kin Town, Kunigami District

📆 Saturday, June 20, 2026

Yucca Nuhii Hari Tournament 🌴 (Remote Islands)

Held on Izena Island’s beach, this event celebrates the traditional Ryukyuan holiday with races and ceremony. Izena is a small island northwest of the main island, accessible by ferry — plan ahead and it makes for a memorable day.

📆 Sunday, June 21, 2026

Henza Hari Tournament 🏝️ (Central)

Out on the islands connected by the Kaichu Road, Henza Island hosts its own Hari at the south port. A compact, community-driven event with island atmosphere built in.

📍 Henza South Port — Henza, Yonashiro, Uruma City

Another island community event along the Kaichu Road corridor. Momobaru’s fishing port becomes the center of the universe for a day, and there are worse ways to spend a Sunday.

📍 Momobaru Fishing Port — Momobaru, Yonashiro, Uruma City

📆 Sunday, June 21, 2026

Why This Is Worth Your Time 🌺

If you’re new to Okinawa — whether you flew in last week or you’ve been stationed here for months and still feel like you’re watching the island through glass — Hari is the kind of event that closes that distance. It’s not designed for you, which is exactly why it works. The drums are real, the competition is real, the community investment is real. You can stand at the edge of any of these harbors, watch the boats race, and feel like you accidentally stumbled into something that was going to happen whether you showed up or not. That is a very good feeling.

Pick a date, add it to your calendar, and go. If you want to plan around more than one, the June 18th and June 21st weekends give you the most options across the island.
