There’s something special about hatsuhinode—the first sunrise of the year. In Okinawa, the sun pops up around 7:17am on January 1, rising from the east-southeast. No freezing temperatures, no heavy coats—just ocean air, quiet roads, and that “okay, new year, let’s do this” feeling.
If you’re thinking of starting the year right, here are some great first sunrise spots across Okinawa, sorted from south to north so you can pick what’s closest (or least painful to wake up for).
📍 Itoman City – Peace Memorial Park
A calm, spacious spot that doesn’t always get the spotlight. Plenty of parking and a peaceful atmosphere make this a solid choice if you want a quiet start to the year. 📍 Nanjo City – Cape Chinen Park
Classic sunrise views with Kudaka Island right in front of you. It does get busy, so early birds win here. Well maintained and family-friendly, too.

📍 Nanjo City – Ojima Island
Easy drive, open horizon, no buildings in the way. Simple, clean, and very “Okinawa morning vibes.” Ojima is one of Okinawa’s best kept treasure.

📍 Nanjo City – Nirai Bridge & Kanai Bridge
You know that moment when you come out of the tunnel and suddenly—boom—ocean? That’s why people love this spot. Just be careful where you stop.

📍 Nanjo City – Kudaka Island
Often called the Island of the Gods. If you’re looking for something spiritual and meaningful to start the year, this one hits different.
📍 Nanjo City – Azama Sun Sun Beach
Right below Seifa-Utaki, this place feels full of natural energy. Watching the sun rise from the direction of Kudaka Island here feels extra special.

📍 Nishihara Town – Creed Nishihara Marine Park
A long, open beach where you can just sit back and watch the sun slowly come up. No rush, no stress—just take it easy.
📍 Kitanakagusuku Village – Nakagusuku Castle Ruins
High ground, wide views, and ocean on both sides. Wear good shoes—there are slopes and stone paths—but the sunrise payoff is worth it.

📍 Yomitan Village – Zakimi Castle Ruins
Beautiful stone walls and big views over central Okinawa. A nice balance of history and scenery without feeling too hectic.

📍 Uruma City – Kaichu Road
One of those places that always feels good to drive, especially early in the morning. Sunrise over the water here is pure Okinawa.

📍 Uruma City – Katsuren Castle Ruins
A 360-degree view from the top. Sunrise, ocean, sky—everything at once. Just take your time getting up there.

📍 Kin Town – Igei Service Area
Old-school sunrise spot overlooking Kin Bay. Easy access and a classic choice that locals have loved for years.

📍 Higashi Village – Tsutsuji Eco Park
Surrounded by nature and super quiet in the early morning. If you like the idea of starting the year slow and peaceful, this one’s for you.
This location is a camp ground. You must reserve a spot over night to see the sunrise in this location. Picture below was taken in April.

📍 Nakijin Village – Uppama Beach
Wide beach, open sky, and views toward Kouri Island. Plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the moment.

📍 Kunigami Village – Asumui
A sacred place with strong energy. Watch the sunrise, then take your time walking around the area—it’s a great way to reset for the year.
Important Note: On New Year’s Day, the park opens from 7:00 a.m. Depending on the weather, you may be able to witness the first sunrise of the year over Asumui shortly after 8:00 a.m. Complimentary drinks will be offer at the Spirit Lounge, the starting point of the walking course.

📍 Kunigami Village – Cape Hedo
The northernmost point of the island and a dramatic way to welcome the new year. Windy, wild, and absolutely worth it if you’re up for the drive.
