I know what you’re thinking. Between trying to figure out if ChatGPT is going to take your job or if your mother-in-law is ever going to stop “suggesting” how to season your eggs, you barely have time to breathe, let alone save a species. But here we are. Apparently, we’ve decided that if we don’t do something, the only turtles left will be the ones on our chocolate boxes. 🐢

It’s the 2nd Annual Okinawa Sea Turtle Festival. Last year was a “success,” which in non-profit speak means 1,000 people showed up and we didn’t lose any children in the tide. This year, the goal is to raise 500 bucks and pretend like we aren’t just monkeys living on a rock. It’s actually for a good cause—celebrating a record-breaking nesting season and trying to keep the “One Ocean One Life” dream alive without it turning into a “One Ocean One Giant Plastic Bag” nightmare.
The Main Attractions
Stage Performances
From 11:15 AM to 4:45 PM, you can witness people actually doing something with their lives. There will be singing, dancing, and the “sanlele”—which is what happens when a sanshin and a ukulele have a baby. It’s the perfect background noise for your existential dread. 🪕💃
Sea Turtle Olympics
Between 11:45 AM and 1:45 PM, the real chaos begins. I assume it involves dragging yourself across the sand while people yell at you, which is basically what most of us do on Monday mornings anyway. There are “exciting prizes” involved, which I hope are better than a participation trophy and a pat on the back. 🏅

Where and When
The festivities are happening at Nirai Beach in Yomitan Village. 📍
The date to mark on your calendar—assuming you haven’t lost it under a pile of bills—is March 7, 2026. The fun starts at 11:00 AM and wraps up at 5:00 PM, right before you have to go back to pretending you enjoy cooking dinner. 🗓️
Check official website for location and parking instructions.

The Extras
Food and Tunes
There will be food trucks. Because if you’re going to save the planet, you might as well do it with a taco in your hand. Musicians and artists will also be there to provide a soundtrack to your environmentalism. 🌮🎸
Eco-Vendors
Plenty of eco-friendly vendors will be selling stuff that makes you feel better about your carbon footprint. It’s a great place to buy a reusable straw that you’ll definitely lose in three weeks. 🛍️

Before You Go
Stop pretending your calendar is too full of high-powered meetings to fit in a trip to the beach. We both know it’s mostly reminders to defrost the chicken and appointments you plan on canceling anyway. Do the turtles—and your sanity—a favor by marking March 7, 2026, on your schedule before your mother-in-law fills that slot with a “surprise” visit to discuss your lawn maintenance. 📅
Once you’ve committed to the flappers, head over to our main events page to see what else is shaking in Okinawa this week. There’s plenty more going on that doesn’t involve your sofa. 🏝️
