The 43rd Okinawa Ogimi Village Summer Festival – Goat, Fireworks, and Food Battles! August 9–10, 2025

  • Events

Ready to witness a tug-of-war where the grand prize is… a goat? 🐐 Yep, you read that right. The 43rd Ōgimi Village Summer Festival is happening over two jam-packed days—August 9 (Saturday) and August 10 (Sunday)—and it’s bringing back all the wild, wonderful chaos that makes Okinawan summers legendary.

Whether you’re into intense karaoke showdowns, massive fireworks, or watching people try to eat their weight in local specialties, this festival’s got you covered. And yes, there will be goats. Real ones.

🥢 Day 1 (August 9): Come Hungry

Saturday kicks off with a toast using local shikwasa vinegar (because soda is for amateurs). Then it’s a nonstop stage party with high school bands, comedy, Hawaiian hula, and even performances by the local women’s association.

But the real test of guts and stomachs comes with the “Māsamun Eating & Drinking Contest.” Think you’ve got what it takes to down Ōgimi’s finest food and drinks faster than anyone else? Just show up and sign up—but spots are limited, so don’t sleep on it. Literally. Don’t nap. Get in line.

🐐 Day 2 (August 10): Tug-of-War for a GOAT

And we mean that literally. Sunday’s headliner is the legendary Goat Tug-of-War. Teams yank on ropes like their dinner depends on it—because the winning squad gets a real, live goat. You need to register ahead of time, so grab your friends, make a team name that sounds way more athletic than you really are, and sign up on the official site.

The day also features karaoke battles, shishimai (lion dancing) by elementary schoolers, and a samba performance by the Ōgimi Village Tourism Ladies. That’s right. Samba. In northern Okinawa. We’re not asking questions.

🎆 Fireworks & Grand Finale

The festival wraps with beautiful fireworks lighting up the coastal sky, a powerful Eisa dance performance, and a huge all-hands-on-deck Kachāshī dance. Everyone joins in—grandmas, babies, awkward tourists. No judgment. Just dance.
